Anton Cooper Makes it back to Back Wins in Christchurch

Fresh off his win last week in Dunedin, Trek World Racing’s Junior XC rider makes it two for two, this time in his home town of Christchurch. Another first this week was that it was Anton’s debut racing onboard a 29er; he chose his Trek Superfly for the 2nd round of the National Series. Here’s his report in his own words:

It was a great to be able to sleep in my own house the night before the race due to the venue being so close to home. The weather forecast was yet again hard to read as conditions changed and rain showers came and went. I decided to run with the Trek Superfly 29er for this race as during practice it felt very comfortable out on course and I was interested to see how it would perform once I was going full steam in a race.

The rain cleared just in time for the start, where the Junior riders were called up and set off 2mins after the Elite field. With plenty of traffic to fight through on the first lap and a greasy track it was tough to make any inroads on the leaders in the Elite field. As the riders cleared out I was able to wind it up and really make up some good ground catching the lead Elite males by the end of my 3rd lap of 5. From there I was able to extend my lead on the Elites to 1min 30secs by the end of my race (as they continued on for 1 more lap). I was very impressed with the way the 29er performed on a world class race track, especially racing the big wheels for the first time.

My choice of tyres turned out to be perfect in the end after switching from Team Issue XR0 tyres to Team Issue XR1's on the morning of the race for a little added grip. Noticeably different from the 26 inch wheel bikes is the increase in traction, especially in corners where you get a larger contact area on 29 inch tyres. Definitely looking forward to doing some more race testing between all the bikes! All in all very satisfied to win the Under 19 category by over 6mins heading into the National Championships in less than a week’s time.
