Flueckiger Brothers In Canary Islands For Training Camp

In what is already their 3rd pre-season training camp, Math and Luk Flueckiger are now in the Spanish Canary Islands swapping the snow and ice of Switzerland for some very welcome sunshine on the Atlantic islands off the African west coast.

Between training camps they’ve been racing their Trek Cronus Cyclo-cross bikes in order to keep their speed up in the winter season. This camp though in the Canary Islands is by their own admission the most important of their preparation for the 2012 Olympic season. Here in Math’s words is how the camp is progressing.

“We are trying to focus on every tiny detail. Besides the training, we are really looking at our food (especially what and how much of it). This is the main reason that we’ve rented a house and not stayed in a hotel. This way we can prepare all of our food as we want, and we eat exactly what our body needs. The next point is the recovery. It’s so important that we’re able to go into every training session fully recovered and able to give it the maximum effort. Last but not least, the training itself. Here in Gran Canaria there are no flat miles, all the streets either go up or down. So the average altitude gain in each training session is more than 3000m, and some of the mountain passes have up to 30% gradient. Using our Shimano gearing of 39 to 28 it makes for very heavy work, but this is exactly what we need for good power!”

Luk says: “Every training session has some specific exercise included, whether it be for power, cadence, speed etc. Since we are both working together with the same coach, Bruno Diethelm, we feel our progress is much more than previous years. We have still some big training sessions ahead of us (up to 6 hours), before we go home and enjoy 3-4 training sessions per week with less hours and then we leave on February 13 to the first pre-races of the season in Cyprus”.

Results from the Sunshine Cup events in Cyprus will be posted here on our website as they come in.
