George Brannigan Finishes 2nd in Schladming, Laurie Greenland Wins Juniors

Trek World Racing sent a full complement of 4 riders to this weekend’s iXS European Cup held on the classic course in Schladming, Austria, host of 6 memorable World Cups back in the mid 2000’s. The course has a massive reputation, and for those riders on our team that had raced here before, it was a welcome return, and for Laurie, it was something he’d always wanted to do.

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on the side of the riders with muddy and rainy conditions prevailing for most of the weekend. In qualifying Laurie was held up by a slower rider and finished 5th, but would not be affected in the finals. George qualified a strong 2nd place behind Danny Hart, with Brook a further 3.8secs back in 7th.

Come race day the rain was intermittent for the juniors’ earlier starts. It looked like it would hold off but at the last minute it rained for the last 5 guys down (then stopped again). Fortunately Laurie managed to put in a great run and take 1st place by 1.1secs over up-and-comer Henry Fitzgerald.

In the men’s race, the first down for the team was Greg Williamson who qualified 16th and was hoping to jump well into the top 10. A terrible call by the Start Commissaire told Greg to go 30secs before his allotted time. Greg followed the instruction and started, then realizing the mistake the Commissaire called out for him to come back but Greg was already into his race run. No re-start was offered but Greg still finished a commendable 9th place despite the stressful start. Brook MacDonald had a great run going before having a massive crash. Uninjured he was able to continue and still drop in for 16th place.

With Loic Bruni (FRA) in the hotseat it was George’s turn to come down the hill. The track was clearly running faster and George took 8.3secs off his qualifying time, beating Loic by a substantial 1.5secs, moving into the lead. All he had to do was wait for the rain master Danny Hart to come down. In the end the margin was tight, only 03.secs, with the win going to Danny.

With two riders on the podium on this classic track the team has had a great weekend. The riders now go into training in France for their lead up to Round 4 of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, July 2-5, in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
