Lukas Flueckiger Takes a Great 5th Place at World Championships

In a race that saw torrential rain and fading daylight in Champery, Switzerland, Luk Flueckiger scored his best ever result in an Elite XC World Championship when he finished 5th yesterday. Luk was aboard his Top Fuel and in the top 10 for all of the race, and despite suffering a puncture on lap 4 of 7 and losing more than a minute, he showed his form was strong and he was able to ride with the best in the world. Meanwhile brother Math, in his first year in the elite category after winning the Under 23 World Title last year, had a solid 13th place, as high as 9th earlier in the race.

The Elite Men’s XC World Championship is always an extremely tough race. This year the race was a little longer than most World Cups, at 1hr 45mins, and making it even trickier was the fact that it started to rain heavily half way through making the technical sections even more treacherous. The four riders finishing ahead of Luk were highly credentialed. Race winner was Jaroslav Kulhavy (CZE) the dominant rider of season 2011 and World Cup Champion. 2nd place was Nino Schurter (SUI) who’s a 3 time World Champion, and third was Julien Absalon (FRA) a multiple World and Olympic Champion. In 4th place was reigning World Champion Jose Hermida (ESP).

Luk said: “Immediately after the race I was a bit disappointed. Not about the puncture, but because I know I can mix it with those guys. I was really nervous before the start and I don’t think I warmed up properly and that affected my start. I should have been in the lead group of 6. But now a little after the race and I look at where I am now compared to the beginning of the season, I prefer to be having a better second half, so I have learned a lot this year, and believe that next year will be even bigger and better for me. A big thanks to my mechanic Oli, he has been a great help this year, as well as all the guys from Trek and my team mates.”

The boys don’t stop racing yet! Next weekend they race the “Bike The Rock” in Heubach (GER), then the first weekend of October they’ll both be at the Roc d’Azur with teammate Tracy Moseley. Last night finished with an amazing Swiss Reception at the team tents, with Raclette and regional foods and wines from the Flueckiger’s local region, with more than 80 guests attending.
