Math Flueckiger Fights Back from Double Puncture at World Cup #5

Round 5 of the UCI Mountain Bike XC World Cup took place today on the storied Mont-Sainte-Anne course in Quebec, Canada, in warm conditions that were dampened by a sudden storm on the final lap of 6. Trek World racing’s Luk and Math Flueckiger had great starts and were inside the top 10 by lap 3.

On lap 4 however, things started to unravel for the guys. Firstly it was Math, who was in 8th behind Luk in 7th, who suffered a rare double puncture on the 2nd descent. He got into the pits and the mechanics worked hard to swap both wheels out and Math returned to the race losing just 1m 40secs and sitting in 16th. Shortly after this Luk crashed heavily in one of the technical woods sections and suffered a neck injury, which turned out to be a form of whiplash. He retired from the event bitterly disappointed after bring in touch with the podium group. Luk didn’t need hospital care but is icing his neck this evening.

Then on the final lap, the heavens opened and the rain lashed the course. Math made his way up to 13th place where he finished a dramatic yet solid race and take his best result of the World Cup season so far.

Math said: “The negative things that happened to me were just bad luck; the positive thing is that my form is good. I was really happy to be in touch with the podium group. Luk and I were on the back of a group that ran from 3rd to 8th, so the double puncture obviously came at a terrible time. I must of hit a rock pretty hard with the rear wheel, and the front went soon after I think. But overall yes, I’m happy with my form, and I felt good on the Superfly today.”

Tomorrow sees their junior team mate Anton Cooper racing at 9.30am local time for his 4 lap event, and he has his fingers for the rain!
